The first cigarette holders originated as a means for beggars in the 18th century to smoke the remnants of cigars discarded by the wealthy. Beggars would wrap the discarded tobacco and cigar ends in a paper, making a makeshift cigarette butt holder and so, the first "short cigarette holder" came into existence.
When cigarettes were introduced, they were specifically targeted towards ladies who would use a cigarette holder as a way to appear more attractive and affluent. Cigarette holders were also used as a filtration device for the weaker sex, and filter holders were incorporated into the design. Indeed, cigarette holders were considered an essential fashion accessory for ladies from around 1900 until the early 1970s and are still widely used today as a fashion accessory in Japan. Some well known ladies who used cigarette holders include Lucille Ball, Audrey Hepburn, Princess Margaret, Rita Hayworth, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Jayne Mansfield. Today, cigarette holders are also used as a means to incorporate additional or secondary filtration, to prevent staining the fingers with nicotine and to prevent the smokers lips from touching the cigarette butt that may have an unpleasant taste.
The cigarette holder is a slender tube made from a wide variety of materials, including silver, jade, Bakelite, enamel, horn, tortoise shell, amber, ivory, wood, and more recently, from plastic. Many are elaborately decorated with inlayed gemstones and/or precious metals. Cigarette holders vary in length from over one foot down to around three inches and are classified into four traditional lengths for ladies: Opera length is normally between 16 to 20 inches, Theater Length from 10 to 14 inches, Dinner length 4 to 6 inches, and Cocktail length from 4 to 6 inches. Mens short cigarette holders are normally no longer than 4 inches.
Short cigarette holders are one of our most popular items. Our Denicotea short cigarette holders are manufactured from a wide range of materials, including shell with a briar tip, short cigarette holders with a briar cup, and we also stock short cigarette holders with and without ejectors (ejectors are used to push out cigarette butts from the short cigarette holder). Some of our short cigarette holders also come in gift boxes that contain a number of regular filters and replacement Denicotea filters are available on our website. Only the original German made, Denicotea filter guarantees a tight fit so that no smoke can bypass the filter.
The Denicotea filters in our short cigarette holders help in absorbing tar, nicotine, gases and other hazardous material emitted from cigarettes. Using a short cigarette holder, reduces the amount of nicotine, gases, tar and other materials inhaled. In addition, cigarette holders reduce the amount of acid in the stomach and intestine that can be experienced by a smoker. By reducing the amount of nicotine inhaled, some find it easier to quit smoking over time.
The Denitip is particularly short cigarette holder, and therefore an unobtrusive cigarette holder with integrated silica gel filter. The integrated silica gel filter in our short cigarette holder can be used 10 to 15 times, reducing nicotine and condensate by about one third.
